The Rise Foundation was established after the success of Rise Films’ documentary, We Are Together, about the children of Agape orphanage in South Africa.

For 15 years, The Rise Foundation has funded the education of the children of Agape Orphanage at local private schools, providing them with quality education and opportunities that they would not have had access to otherwise. Due to an inequitable education system, quality education in South Africa is out of reach for many families hoping to escape generational poverty.

During the past 15 years, many of our students have passed through elementary, high school, vocational programmes, university and post-graduate degree programmes at some of the best educational institutions in South Africa. Between them, they have achieved or are working towards undergraduate degrees in Arts, Business, English, Marketing, Psychology, Law, Graphic Design and Politics. Several of our students are currently completing or working towards post-graduate studies in Law, Psychology and Education. Others are raising families, living and working independently, establishing small businesses and improving their skills and qualifications.

While the journey has not been easy for any of our students, we have learned over the years to provide holistic support, covering not only school fees but living stipends, job search grants, business grants, mental health support funding, skills development, practical qualifications and emergency care during times of difficulty. Throughout the Covid-19 Pandemic, many of our beneficiaries have faced increased pressures and difficulties finding and maintaining jobs and we have been able to provide some stability and safety.

We have known all our beneficiaries for 15 years, from when they were toddlers, small children and teenagers, and we are incredibly proud of them.
